Zagreb Book Festival

Željka Preskar (BIE Zagreb), Petra Ljevak (ZBF) and Mile Grubišić (BIE Zagreb)

We were welcomed by the project leader of the festival, Miss Petra Ljevak, and made a guided tour of all the sections (novels, non-fiction, children books…).

After the tour, we gathered at the bar of the museum and started talking about the current festival. Miss Ljevak explained us how the partnership with Sweden started and what the Swedish Embassy did to help the organization.

Not only the Zagreb Book Festival got financial support of Sweden, but the Embassy also gave organizational and logistic assistance, arranged the stay of Swedish authors in Zagreb, gave information about Swedish literature etc.

Then the possibility of Belgium being the guest country during one of the next editions of the festival (2017?) was discussed. Miss Ljevak showed interest in the Belgian literature and saw, e.g., opportunities for the Belgian comics.

We explained her that the French-and Flemish-speaking Communities would be promoted, instead of Belgium as a country.Further contact (by mid-June) was agreed by both sides.

From our side, this visit was viewed as the follow-up to our last year's presentation of Belgium as a business destination, which we organized in June of 2014 in Pula, in cooperation with the Croatian Chamber of Commerce.

Smurfs in a Christmas Fairy Tale

The Economic and Commercial Attaché of the Belgian Embassy of Belgium in Croatia, Mr. Antonio Garcia, and his associates visited the Salaj family farm in Grabovnica on April 10th, 2015.

The reason for visiting the Salaj farm is linked to their latest project - the so-called Smurf village, as the Smurfs are one of the best export products of Belgium.

The owner told us that this year his estate would be decorated and illuminated with more than 1,500,000 lights. For many years, this has already been as such a real tourist attraction in Croatia and beyond.

Mr. Garcia and Mr. Zlatko Salaj, the farm's owner and founder of the Smurf village concept, agreed upon a way of cooperation regarding the promotion of the Smurfs and help in further negotiations between Mr. Salaj and the Smurf licensee in Belgium, the company I.M.P.S. The International Tourism Fair Place2go

The International Tourism Fair Place2go (http://www.place2go.org/) took place in Zagreb from March 13th - 15th 2015. The Croatian office of Brussels Invest&Export (www.brussel-in-croatia.com) presented the City of Brussels, in close cooperation with VisitBrussels (www.visitbrussels.be), a major stakeholder of the promotion of the Belgian Capital City.

Brussels is usually thought of as the capital of the European Union, as well as one of the most important economic and political capitals in Europe. However, at the Fair, Brussels was presented rather as a European tourist and cultural centre.

The citizens of Zagreb were particularly interested in the flower carpet displayed every two years in August at the main square in Brussels. The City of Brussels is full of many other attractions such as the Atomium, Manneken Pis, monuments, palaces, museums and parks, but what is most known are its chocolate, beer and comic books, which were also presented at the Fair.

During the Fair, several meetings were held with Croatian travel/tourist agencies, which decided to include Brussels in their City Break promotional packs this year. As there were lots of positive reactions and feedback, our office will continue to promote Brussels as a tourist and cultural centre of Europe.

This trip was a preparation to our participation to the International Tourism Fair Place2Go (www.place2go.org), which was to take place in Zagreb from March 13th to 15th.
